PATROCLUS

ACRYLIC PAINT ON CANVAS

This contemporary piece explores masculinity in love and relationships. The traditionally feminine symbol of butterflies clutters the subject’s head as he stares at the viewer. He is stoic and firm, but also has a youthful and hopeful appearance. He appears to be made of stone, yet his mind is filled with emotion.

This piece was inspired by Madeline Miller’s book, the Song of Achilles. The novel explores Patroclus and Achilles relationship before and during the classic events of the Illiad. The character of Patroclus inspired this piece because he is gentle, loving, and brave which are core values of both masculinity and femininity.
